| From the age of 12, I've always wanted a '65-'66 fastback. I saw my first one driving the streets of Cumberland, Maryland and fell in love with the car. I was obsessed. I used to get magazines and catalogs and dream of the parts I would purchase IF I had one. My parents thought I was looney. I only wanted a '65-66...no other year would do. I also bought the same Monogram model over and over and painted it different colors each time to help me decide what color I wanted it to be. Dark green with white stripes was my favorite, but that's changed over the last 22 years. |
| I know very little about the history of the car, options, or ownership. I know that before I purchased it, the car was owned by Mike Rose in Virginia. Prior to that, it was owned by Steve Cantrell, also in Virginia. I'm not able to locate him to find out more about the car or previous owners. I've gathered that it was run on the drag strip, or at least beefed up a little. When I bought the car, it had a '71 302 with 351 heads, a medium cam, and 4:10 gears. |
| Right after I got the car, I had the hood and passenger door skin replaced and painted. I also had the 4:10 gears replaced with 3:00 so I could drive the car on the interstate. I also wasted alot of money on little stuff. I went crazy with the parts catalogs and replaced the headers & exhaust, radiator & hoses, ignition system, etc. If it was dirty or corroded, I replaced it. I bought a few items on eBay too. I wanted to put the extractor vents back in, so I bought everything I needed; pot metal vent housings, chrome vents, inner vent panel, chrome sliders and knobs, and interior fiberglass panels. Now I think I'll leave the quarter windows in the car. I did put the interior panels back in though, to replace the nasty looking Shelby panels. And so you cant see the backside of the vent panels, I painted the inside of the lexan windows. | ||
| Then I had
problems with the 351 heads. The top of one of the valves
had rounded off and the rocker arm slipped off. I had the
opportunity to get a 1965 289 that was rebuilt and bored
.30 over, so I swapped the motor out. Actually, I helped
Hink, Bill, and Rocky with the swap. It was cheaper to
change out the motor than get the heads rebuilt. Plus, I
think the 302 was going sour anyway. Many thanks to those
guys for their help and infinite wisdom. Now I've got a
1965 289 in a 1965 Mustang. Plus I really needed to detail the engine bay. The first time I did it. the engine was still in the car. It didn't look as clean as I wanted, plus only the top half of the motor was painted. So now the ole' 302 that was in the car when I bought it is sitting outside of the garage door waiting to get disposed. Poor thing.

| The car was my daily driver, so it was a target. It was subjected to the same dangers as any other car. I kind of expected it to receive a little respect from other drivers, but I was wrong. So of course it got hit. A former co-worker backed the company truck into the driver side door. The door was open so it was pushed forward. Thankfully, the door, hinges and the rear edge of the fender were the only parts that were damaged. The door pillar was not damaged in any way. The company's insurance took care of the repairs. It was time to call NPD. I did all of the work myself, and saved a little money. I decided to wait on the paint job too until I was able to save for a total color change. Again, my intentions were to paint it black with the gold Hertz stripes. I had a few folks tell me to leave it red, but I'm stubborn and really wanted a Hertz clone. White it is! I think. |
| As you can see, I've got original headlight housings and a new front valance and stone guard to put on. The nose got a little messed up as we towed the car from garage to garage working on it. I also need to get ahold of a rear valance with backup lights and without exhaust holes. I'm going to put 2 1/2" side exit exhaust on the car. |
I'm debating on a few issues though. First, I'm a comestic driven fellow. In otherwords, it doesn't have to be a hi-performance car that turns on a dime or leave 100ft tire marks, so I don't know if I'll work on the motor, steering, or suspension. Although I should change all of the front and rear bushings.
Second, the floor boards have been repaired. I found a few spots filled with fiberglass resin. The holes in the sheet metal aren't all the way through the floor boards though. I don't know if I should tear it down and have those replaced. I've already got the interior finished the way I want it. The trunk needs work too. I may clean it up and cover it with Rhino Lining or something similar.
Third, it's got an C4 auto tranny. Should I put in an AOD or 5-speed. If I do replace it, I'll have to change out the rear again. As I said, it's got 3:00 gears in it right now. I dunno. I guess I'll figure it out as I go.
